Your alarm clock rang on January 2nd and your heart almost jumped out of your chest! The relaxed but busy days of the winter break abruptly came to an end, and now it’s back to the crazy rush of school days: the running of feet to grab shoes and backpacks, the yelling of parents that the school bus is coming in “5 minutes,” and the madness to get things done between drop-off and pick-up time. Between parents’ hectic schedules and kids’ homework, it can be hard to schedule after school activities, but there’s still time to sign kids up and make sure that they get the best out of term 2.

When looking for activities that kids enjoy and can learn from, there are different things to think about:

Tire them Out: Probably the biggest reason to sign our kids up for after school activities, is to help them burn off the extra energy they’ve been building up all day at school. By signing them up for after school sports, or activities that get them moving, they stay healthy and come home in a better mood. It’s also a way to get those kids away from their screens and devices for an hour or two. My kids usually want to come straight home to the TV or iPad, and I feel a lot better about giving them some screen time if I know that they have been exercising and exerting themselves.

A great activity for budding athletes is the AIS track and field academy, which gives kids professional training in this sport. Little Champions is also offering a variety of sports classes, while Urban Swim Academy has swimming classes for all ages throughout the term. If you have a budding world cup champ, check out Foottown, where they make soccer for boys and girls lots of fun.

At Velocity, they are offering cricket and soccer sports classes, while at Footlab they also have the option of football classes, without having to commit to a full term of activities. You can break the kids after school routine, by taking them to Aventura Parks for some time on their zipline and ropes course, as either a one-off or regular activity.

Tap Into their Creativity: Extracurricular activities are also a great way for kids to great creative outside of school and try something artistic that goes beyond what we can do with them at home. Custom art classes at Kim Oberoi Studio in Green Community, trains kids to be little artists and prepare for their own gallery showing, through specially designed art modules. Creativity can also mean culinary arts, and at Mamalu’s Kitchen on the Palm, they’ve got special January cooking classes for kids, that can be a nice way for your kid to unwind outside of school and learn a new skill. Some of the class themes are world spaghetti day, baking, or even a cookie monster workshop.

Build Their Confidence: Dance and performance are a nice way for kids to get moving and get creative at the same time. Lots of kids discover their hidden talents and overcome stage fright, while building their confidence through drama and dance. At Aura Academy of the arts in Silicon Oasis and Ibn Battuta Mall, kids can explore everything from Bollywood dance and fitness to music classes and ballet. At Dramafit they’ve got acting classes for the littlest actors to big kids that dream of the stage. Hiphop Cardio lets kids have fun and learn cool dance moves as part of a dance team. They can feel like they learned something new and are capable of performing like little stars.

Bolster Their Language Learning: After school is also a good time for kids to either learn a new language or support what they are learning in class. If your kids are having trouble picking up all the difficult grammar and rules of the Arabic language, I Read Arabic online program, makes it easy for them to learn more and get ahead

The second term has started and it’s time to sign kids up for after school activities to keep them busy, engaged and learning new skills. All these fun and flexible activities will help them grow and flourish and build a great 2023 for each and every one of them.
